Koh Samui Scuba Diving

 

The sheltered Gulf of Thailand offers a range of dive sites to cater for every level of diver throughout the year. The Gulf of Thailand, includes famous dive sites such as Sail Rock and several other excellent scuba diving sites and the marine national parks around Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and the Angthong Marine National Park are world famous dive places.

Koh Samui Diving

Scuba Diving on from the Gulf of Thailand offers great dive locations within easy distance of resort Island of Koh Samui and also sister Islands of Koh Taoand Koh Phangan. And not forgetting the Angthong Marine National Park. Most of the diving courses in Thailand are concentrated in this area and more famously the island of Koh Tao which offers beautiful fringing coral reefs and the closest land base to all the majority of The Gulf's Dive Sites. Snorklers will love the spectacular Koh Nangyuan that has 3 adjoining beaches and three small islands.

Dive locations around Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan:

Chumpon Pinnacle
Starts at 14 meters underwater and drops off to around 35+ meters, a large granite rock pinnacle and a series of smaller structures. Chumphon is considered by many to be Koh Taos best site. At the top of this rock are sea anemones and Anemone Fish in abundance. Giant Groupers are also amongst the rock with impressive schools of Bat Fish, Jacks, Trevally and Barracuda. Grey Reef Sharks are frequently sighted around here as well as Whale Sharks depending on season.

Southwest Pinnacle
The site is formed by one distinct and very beautiful rock, with a smaller summit just below the surface at about 5-6 meters, from here the formation then drops down and spreads out, touching the sea floor at about 28-30 meters. Smaller pinnacles and gaps appear from the main rock structure creating some stunning underwater scenes. Giant Groupers , Blue Ringed Angelfish, Bannerfish and huge shoals of Yellow Tailed Barracuda. Grey Reef Sharks are also some times sighted here as are Whale Sharks depending on season.

Twins
A pair of large rocks lie just off the west side of the beautiful island of Koh Nangyuan. One rock lies nearer to the island at around 8 meters and the other further out at around 16 meters. Between the two rocks you will see small groups of clown fish and if you look closely White Eyed Moray Eels, Blue Spotted Rays, Bannerfish, Butterflyfish, Red Breasted Wrasse and the resident turtle can be found here.

Green Rock
This site offers some exiting swim through's and various tunnel formations spread around boulders which start as shallow as 1-2 meter below the surface down to 26- 28 meters. White Eyed Morays, Blue Spotted Rays, Angelfish, Butterfly fish and Hawksbill Turtles can be sighted. Near to the site is a large nesting ground for the famous Titan Triggerfish which are famously aggressive!

White Rock
Koh Tao's most popular dive sites with a depth range of 1 to 22 meters south of Koh Nangyuan. The site consists of a large granite pinnacle and smaller rock formations deeper spread to the west a few meters away. Rays, Moray Eels,Wrasse and Hexagon Grouper are found on the rock ledges with Longtom fish close to the surface.

Shark Island
This island as such is southeast of Koh Tao. It has a shallower point on the north starting 9-12 meters with coral fish amongst large coral gardens. And on the south side there are deeper places are from 27m where sightings of Leopard or Black Tip Reef Sharks and Chevron Barracuda. Parrotfish and of course Titan Triggerfish.

Koh Samui and her Islands dive sites are within day trip distance directly from piers including Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock, offering submerged pinnacles, large rocky seamount's, colourful corals and reefs with plenty of marine life, with sightings of Whale sharks. Other neighbouring Islands of Samui where diving can be enjoyed include Koh Tao Koh Phangan
